Ready to Fly... Salsify Seeds Acrylic Print

Botanical Art in Digital Impressionist style by Shelli Fitzpatrick

This charming seed head with it's snowy white feathery fluff belongs not to the dandelion as you might think but to a much larger invasive wildflower that grows profusely on my 10 acre plot. This is the yellow goats beard in it's last stages of glory before the end of it's life, sending out its cute fuzzy flying seeds on the wind to carry on it's legacy next spring. This plant is regarded as a weed by most people, but if you study herbs and forage plants like I do, you soon learn that this is a valuable edible species in that you can eat the root, stems and leaves either raw or boiled and they are reported to taste like oysters and to be nutritious. Other common names for this beautiful yellow wildflower are, wild oyster plant, and common Salsify.
